The first time I met Dr. Abbate was the day he performed my procedure, so I honestly didn’t know what to expect. From that very first meeting, he immediately made me feel comfortable and reassured me that I was in good hands. He continued to be so caring, patient, and attentive. He always took the time to answer my questions and make sure I was comfortable. He has such a calm and comforting way about him, and his kindness really stood out to me. I’m very grateful to have had Dr. Abbate as my doctor. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, but also so kind and easy to talk to. This practice is one of the best that I have ever experienced. Go twice a year for a skin checkup. I always take the 6 AM appointments. Twice, I've had to go for a concern and the appointments were late morning. The place both times was packed! I don't know how they do it - moving patients along and giving the most amount of time and care. I expected to wait an hour. But, I was in a room and saw Dr. Abbate within 20 minutes. He is a wonderful doctor and a wonderful person. The staff is professional and always so courteous. Again, I don't know how they do it. Great practice on ALL accounts. My whole family would never consider another practice. You want the best? This is the place.

I think I've said it a multitude of times in some of my reviews but--- here we go again! ---- "getting old sucks, but it beats the alternative." I never gave the topic of skin cancer a 2nd thought until my father had to have a spot on his skin removed over 30 years ago. This threw me into a profound depression, and I got drunk (in those days, I didn't really need profound depression, or even mild depression, as an excuse to get drunk, although it was to my mind a very good excuse/reason). Turns out, skin cancer if caught early is not the worst cancer, and my father lived for several more decades. On another occasion, an older co-worker, with Irish skin fairer than mine, had a very large segment of skin removed from his face. It wasn't disfiguring, but he did look like he had come out the clear loser in a serious bar-room brawl. It was sinking in for me that cancer of any sort, skin or otherwise, wasn't something to take lightly. In my last physical, my doctor pointed to a spot on the side of my forehead, and said, almost casually, "You should get that looked at by a dermatologist." I was aware of the spot, which had been there for a few years, and had assumed it was merely the result of aging skin-- a "freckle" or "sunspot." I wasn't a "sun-lover," but during my childhood, my parents were devotees of lying in the sun at the beach, and, as an adult, I often ran for 6 miles at a stretch in the blazing sun. So, I wasn't cavalier about my doctor's suggestion. My oldest friend has a Mediterranean olive complexion, but he was a lifeguard and surfer in his younger days, and he's been going to a dermatologist for 20 years. I asked for a recommendation and he recommended Dr. Abbate. Nice guy, very knowledgeable, very thorough in his examination. Not loving the thought of having to drive to Riverdale, I sent an email to Dr. Abbate's office and to another dermatologist closer to home. Dr. Abbate's office responded immediately. The other guy? Never heard from him. My choice had been made. I did ask my friend, "This Dr. Abbate-- this isn't the kid we knew from grade school, is it? That Mark Abate is our age, and this Dr. on his website photo is a young man. This isn't a 'Picture of Dorian Gray' thing going on, is it?" "No," my friend replied calmly. "This isn't the same guy you were in Cub Scouts with." The office is modernistic, off of Rt. 23, but I do have to mention that the parking situation is abysmal. I had to circle around 3 or 4 times before I secured a spot. It appears that "valet service" is available, but I'm not entirely sure how that works out in a restaurant, much less a medical office. In the waiting room, I was surrounded by older people, which I have to admit was disconcerting to me. In spite of what I say, I still like to think of myself as firmly entrenched in middle-age as opposed to old-timer status. In fact, 1 guy in a wheelchair started trembling and had to be wheeled into a back room for a "medical emergency." EMT personnel arrived quickly on the scene. Hopefully, things worked out OK for him. (In fairness, there were 1 or 2 young people in the office and even a child.) Mercifully, it didn't take long for me to be called inside. I was told to take off my clothes with the exception of my shorts and put on a backless paper smock. This is always a bit unnerving to me as my physique is no longer that of the runner/weight-lifter I once was, and...the spot is on my face, Doc! Is this near-total nudity really necessary? The Dr. and nurse came in, and Dr. Abbate was very friendly and personable. I mentioned my old friend, and Dr. Abbate nodded his head fondly, and told me to say hello to him. He also mentioned that 1 of his golfing partners has the same last name as me, and wondered if we could be related? My last name is common in north Jersey and I shrugged. Maybe we are, maybe not. (Irrelevant aside: I have the same last name as a writer famous in the 20s, but the only "famous" people I might actually be related to are prohibition mobster Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll and old-time character actor J. Carrol Naish. Maybe. Then again, maybe not...) Dr. Abbate was thorough in his examination, looking at my feet, legs, under my arms, front, back, and backside. In deference to modesty, he asked about the groin area, and I was spared that part of the examination. He then asked if I had a problem with needles. Not really, but I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, so I kind of equivocated. He put the needle in, and then I guess "scraped" the facial spot in question (it stung a bit but no real pain). A small bandage was put on it, and I was told I would hear back in 2 weeks. We shook hands, and I made an appointment for next year. With the caveat about the difficult parking situation, this visit was as pleasant and painless as these things can possibly be. Dr. Abbate is a real nice guy, professional and thorough, and I'm glad I "picked" him as my dermatologist. Highly recommended.

This is the fourth of fifth time I have been a patient at Schweiger Dermatology Group. I have gone there for my yearly skin check up and a minor facial augmentation. Each time I have been there it has been a positive experience. This last visit I went for a yearly skin check up. While I was there I asked for some help with an injury I sustained a week prior. It was broken skin on my foot. Melissa Sabari, the PA was so kind to take a look at it. She had to go on to her next patient and her assisting nurse , Antuane, stayed and changed my dressing. Since that time, I have switched to Schweiger Dermatology and continue to be very, very pleased with the care and the treatment that they have given me. I have seen Dr. Abbate a few times and I’m very taken with how pleasant he is and how easy he is to talk to. He recently removed a small growth and put a few stitches in. Melissa Ramos PA-C literally honestly saved me!! I was suffering from dermatitis for about two months that was progressively getting worse to the point where I couldn't take the pain anymore. I saw a different provider at a different location who misdiagnosed me and I was on so many different prescriptions that nothing was working if anything it was becoming worse. I then went to the emergency room and an ENT hoping my condition would get better but again absolutely NO LUCK!! On Monday morning I called for a same day appointment and luckily I got in. I wasn't confident that this would be resolved but at this point I had nothing to loose. Little did I know that day would improve my condition later that night. Melissa Ramos PA-C, you are amazing at what you do! Thank you for taking the time to see me and throughly examine my condition and making sure that I was being prescribed the right medication after months of struggle. I finally found relief and I am recovering and healing from this infection and dermatitis. I cannot thank you enough and I hope this reaches you!! If anyone is looking for a dermatologist who actually cares about you look no further!!

Having any kind of skin cancer, especially on your face, can be stressful, and scary, but Dr. Spates was professional, kind and went above and beyond to make the procedure as smooth and painful as possible-free as possible. He even called my home to make sure I arrived safely and gave his contact number if I had any problems. I was able to obtain an appointment with Nicole, who is very easy to talk to, listened to my concerns, treated me and was able to give me a few samples to get started. My regular dermatology group - could NOT make an app't. to get me in for 2 to 3 months. Called The Derm Group, & they had a cancellation that I could fill in 2 days (although..., it was for 8:15 in the morning). Dr. Abatte diagnosed it as skin cell basal carcinoma, & the office staff scheduled me the very next week - for another dermatologist who 'specializes' in this. Procedure took about 1/2 hr., & then a follow-up to have the stitches removed. BOTH doctors DID A FANTASTIC job! About a year after this, my wife needed to schedule an app't., & Dr. Abbate removed (rather quickly - in 15 minutes), a large, ruptured cyst. AMAZING! AND . . ., THANKS!!!

He is very knowledgeable as well as compassionate. He allows his patients to communicate and he really cares unlike Dr grosser in Nutley who does not allow patients to speak, and misdiagnosed me 3 times inside 3 months had me taking medication that did nothing for my condition as he did not know what to treat, and refused to acknowledge lab corp results. Dr. Abate actually had me on the road to recovery the same week I visited him. He did not lie to me or steer me wrong. He actually walked me through the entire treatment along with nurse J, and Barbara and these two women are super nurses as they were on top of everything!!. I am cured now and I have Dr. Abate and his staff to thank. They saved me from the nightmare at Dr. Grosser in Nutley. Thank you Sari, Dr . Abatte and staff. I am forever grateful and highly recommend the Riverdale office and Dr. Abbate and staff. Stay away from Dr. Grossier in Nutley. He is a liar, he is condescending, in addition to not being a very good doctor over all. Don't take my word for it, please read the Google reviews before mine and see for yourself how long patients have been screaming the same for YEARS!! I have choice words however it is not suitable for Google. Lastly you know it is bad when a patient has to say to a doctor "slavery is OVER!" However, the floor had smudges and piece of tissue paper (looked like exam table paper) on the floor. I expect the floor to be reasonably clean and free of loose debris. I've seen Gabby & Dr Abbate in the office - both are fabulous doctors & take the time to explain everything. Dr Abbate did my basal cell carcinoma surgery & I had zero pain. I would highly recommend both of them. Gabby did my biopsies & froze some spots, again very little pain. She also treated atopic dermatitis on my hands that no one else could heal. The staff is very helpful as well. The only glitch is trying to call for appointments, a bit frustrating.

Thanks to Dr. Nicole Colucci, I can feel confident after my annual body scan. If something is there, she will see it and have it checked for you. She will ask you for any concerns you may have too. My brother is fighting melanoma with infusions every few weeks which leave him tired. He had a mole that was cancerous which started on his back shoulder and waited too long to have it checked out. A dermatologist would have ordered a test right away. Don't put off your annual body scan especially all of you sun worshipers, I was once one myself.

Dr. Abbatte is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! Over the years I have been to sooooo many dermatologist who didn't have great bedside manner, who blamed me for my skin problems, and who failed to help me... Some even making my skin worse. Dr. Abbatte took one look at my acne and knew exactly what I needed. He cleared my skin quickly, without side effects, and not just for the short term. Any time I need an adjustment or have a problem, he REALLY listens and works to fix it. And he is always caring and kind. He always makes sure I have my medicine when I need it, unlike other doctors both in the practice and outside of it. I would drive for hours to see Dr. Abbatte if I had to, and I wouldn't see anyone else. His nurses are also always the sweetest! I'm so glad to have found Dr. Abbatte!

I used to go to The Derm Group Verona office before moving. Once I moved I didn’t realize there was a Riverdale office and went to a different group until just last week. I was very unhappy with the previous group. Due to my age I felt like my complete skin exams took 1-2 minutes and were not thorough at all despite close family history of melanoma. My first visit at the Riverdale office was excellent. I saw Gabbie and she was friendly, listened to my concerns and treated me thoroughly. She even pointed out a mole for biopsy that I’ve been trying to have the previous office address for two years. I plan on bringing my daughter and encouraging my husband to use this dermatology group as well.

Dr. Spates and his nurse Donna were fantastic! They walked me through the procedure, asked if I had questions, answered all of my questions and made sure I knew what was going on through each step of the procedure. Two follow up calls the day of the procedure to make sure I was good and another the day afterwards. Super quick response a week later when I had a question got a call back within 30 mins. I have had a few procedures with Dr.Spates and would highly recommend him and is medical staff.

The newly decorated office & building is beautiful. Staff followed all Covid-19 safety protocols. I called Monday for my yearly full body scan but also to have a spot looked at. I was able to get in the following day due to a cancellation. The physician’s assistant was able to do the full body scan and biopsy the mark on the same visit.

Depending who you are scheduled with for an appointment... If on time or after a few others who arrived early and checked in before you, the wait isn't too bad at times.. Expect to wait for about 1/2 hour, even if you are on time and checked in. Other than that, the staff and doctors are very nice and accommodating.

I accompanied my 88 y/o dad to his derm appointment. We had a great experience. The person at the front desk was courteous and welcoming. The medical assistants were also courteous and helpful. My Father had his exam with Nicole Colucci PA. She was professional, knowledgeable and had a wonderful bedside manner. She removed 2 lesions. 1 from his finger and 1 from his face. Her expertise and gentle manner were reassuring for my dad. Keeping our fingers crossed that the pathology report on the lesions is a good one.

From the moment I walked they the door, I was impressed! My information was collected and I was ushered into a waiting room immediately! Donna, Dr. Spates assistant was friendly and told me all that I could expect, since this was my first experience with them. I didn’t have to wait long before I saw Dr Spates and was so pleased at how at ease he put me. After my first procedure, I had a second and both the doctor and attendant checked on me several times. I was given detailed follow up instructions and choices of prescriptions to take. I received a follow up call on my way home and the next morning!
